Winter is here in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Several snowfalls have come and gone and it feels like another one is on the way in the next few days. Time has passed so quickly it seems like only yesterday it was the beginning of Fall. I’m learning the different ways that snow appears, and the most wondrous thing I have noticed was during a snowfall a few days ago. The morning sun reflected tiny electric colored drops in emerald green and fuschia. One had to look very closely or these miniature jewels might have been missed. Like tiny fairy lights dotted across the white landscape. It is a time of reflection and introspection for >>
Confections of Snow
Just over a week ago the Blue Ridge Mountains were suddenly and wondrously blanketed with snow, and this part of western North Carolina just outside Sylva saw over nine inches fall in a day. Some of our neighbors on the eastern side of Jackson County received two feet of snowflakes. The amount of snow befuddled the weatherman, and has been the talk of the town and the main headline in this week’s local news. Due to the cold temperatures, snow still remains in many areas. For over 24 hours the fine snow fell and created a winter wonderland of peace here on Brushy Fork Mountain. Mother Nature put on her finest gown of shimmering white and glowed with >>
Season of Light
On the morning of the Autumn Equinox, the sun streaming through the fog in the mystical Nantahala Forest outside my window beckoned me to grab my camera. So I hurriedly put on my shoes and threw on my jacket over my pajamas and scampered outside. Surrounded by the forest, my closest human neighbors are half a mile away down the dirt and gravel mountain road near the peak of Brushy Fork’s ridge in the Greens Creek community outside Sylva, NC. The serenity and silence are heavenly. What happened over the next half hour was one of the most incredible displays of Nature I have ever experienced. I believe that God puts people and places in our paths. On >>
Night Night Nantahala
From the ridges and the knolls To the hollows and the coves, Night night Nantahala It’s time for the dark. There’s a pattern that beckons The darkness To cover the forest at night. When the moon and stars overhead Signal the nocturnal time is at hand. In the morning the sunlight Streams inside the cathedral Illuminating the land within. Good morning Nantahala Land of the noon day sun. Your day has begun. Magical shafts of light beam through the branches To the forest floor. Sending the light of truth To the world below. Awaken and listen to your hearts And find the truth within. Lift up the world With your voice and Let Love >>
The Path of the Feather
“Be ever mindful of strangers, for sometimes we have entertained angels unaware.” Hebrews 13:2 About fifteen years ago, I started finding feathers everywhere I walked. When I stepped out my home’s front door, there was feather, or two, on my garden path. When I opened my car door and stepped out of my car, there was a feather on the ground or on the sidewalk. One summer day in 2012, I was walking up to my front door and saw something small stuck to the door mat. I stopped to inspect the small object and voila! There was a soft brown and white feather, an owl feather. Amazing serendipitous things happen when we open ourselves to communications with >>
